The prefix commonly appears as a free-standing word in amino acid, one of a number of organic compounds essential for life; the name comes from the presence of an amine group in each. The aminoglucosides are a group of antibiotics that includes streptomycin; aminophylline is used to treat asthma; aminoplastic resins derive from amine compounds such as urea; aminocarb is an insecticide.
