From Latin gingiva, gum.

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums; the adjective gingival refers to the gums; a gingivectomy (Greek ektomē, excision) is the surgical removal of gum tissue, and gingivostomatitis (Latin stoma, mouth) is a virus infection that of the gums and mucous membranes of the mouth.
