Pharyngitis is inflammation of the pharynx, causing a sore throat; a pharyngotomy (Greek ‑tomia, cutting) is a surgical incision into the pharynx; a pharyngoscope is a device for examining the pharynx; in phonetics, to pharyngealize a sound is to articulate it with constriction of the pharynx; the usual adjective relating to the pharynx is pharyngeal.
