dynam(o)- Also dyna-.
Power.
[Greek dunamis, power.]
The Greek root is present in dynamic and its relatives, relating to a process or system that undergoes constant change, activity, or progress; a dynamo (originally a dynamo-electric machine), converts mechanical energy into electrical energy; a dynamometer measures the power output of an engine. The name of the explosive dynamite contains the same root, as does dyne, a unit of force in the obsolete CGS system, equivalent to 10-5 of a newton.
