karyo-

Also caryo‑.

The nucleus of a cell.

Greek karuon, kernel.

The karyotype is the number and visual appearance of the chromosomes in the cell nuclei of an organism or species; karyogamy is the fusion of cell nuclei during fertilization; karyokinesis (Greek kinēsis, movement), is division of a cell nucleus during mitosis, normal cell reproduction. Rarely, the spelling caryo‑ is found, as in caryopsis (Greek opsis, appearance), a dry one-seeded fruit, typical of grasses and cereals, a grain.
