Latin lamina, a thin plate

The word lamina (plural laminae) refers to thin plates of various kinds, such as scales, layers, or flakes; something laminar consists of thin layers; to laminate a surface is to overlay it with a layer of plastic or some other protective material; laminitis is inflammation of sensitive layers of tissue inside the hoof in horses and other animals; a laminectomy (Greek ektomē, excision) is a surgical operation to remove the back of one or more vertebrae. In phonetics, laminal refers to a consonant formed with the blade of the tongue touching the alveolar ridge.
