[Greek mastos, breast.]

A mastectomy (Greek ektomē, excision) is a surgical operation to remove a breast; mastology is the medical study of the human breast; mastitis is inflammation of the mammary gland in the breast or udder; a mastodon (Greek odous, odont-, tooth) is an extinct elephant-like mammal whose molar teeth had nipple-shaped tubercles on their crowns. The mastoid process, a conical prominence behind the ear to which the neck muscles are attached, derives its name from Greek mastoeidēs, breast-shaped. See also mammo-.
