Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorders and diseases of the eye, a specialist in which is an ophthalmologist; an ophthalmoscope is an instrument for inspecting the retina and other parts of the eye; ophthalmitis is inflammation of the eye; ophthalmoplegia (Greek plēgē, stroke) is paralysis of the muscles within or surrounding the eye.
