An ovariectomy (Greek ektomē, excision) is surgical removal of one or both ovaries, a procedure also known as ovariotomy (Greek -tomia, cutting) or oophorectomy; ovaritis is inflammation of an ovary. An ovariole is one of the egg tubes in insects of which the ovary is composed. See also oophoro- and ovi-.
