Dusky.
Greek phaios, dusky.
A phaeochromocytoma is a small vascular tumour of the adrenal gland, so called because cells in it are a dusky colour; phaeohyphomycosis is a fungal infection caused by darkly pigmented moulds; the class of lower plants called the Phaeophyceae (Greek phukos, seaweed) comprises the brown algae. Forms in pheo‑ are standard US spellings.
