A colposcope is a surgical instrument used to examine the vagina and the cervix of the womb. A colpotomy (Greek ‑tomia, cutting) is any surgical incision into the wall of the vagina; colporrhaphy (Greek rhaphē, a seam) is an operation to remove lax and redundant vaginal tissue in cases of prolapse of the vaginal wall.
