cupr(o)-

Copper.

Latin cuprum, copper.

Two adjectives relating to copper compounds are cuprous, containing monovalent copper (as in cuprous sulphate), and cupric, containing divalent copper (as in cupric chloride). An example of an ore yielding copper is cuprite, a dark red mineral; cuprammonium is a solution of cupric hydroxide in ammonia, a solvent for cellulose; cupro-nickel is an alloy of copper with nickel.
