Forming verbs.

French ‑iss‑ (from stems of verbs ending in ‑ir), from Latin ‑isc‑ (a suffix forming verbs that express the beginning of an action).

Examples deriving directly from such French verbs include abolish, banish, burnish, establish, flourish, furnish, impoverish, nourish, and punish. Some, from French verbs with other endings, have adopted the ending by analogy, such as astonish, distinguish, publish, and varnish.
