lyo-

Dispersion; dissolution.

Greek luein, loosen or dissolve.

A lyophilic colloid is one readily dispersed by a solvent and not easily precipitated, its opposite being lyophobic; to lyophilize a substance is to freeze-dry it; a lyotropic material is one whose phase is determined by its concentration.
