An antibiotic compound derived from fungi.
Greek mukēs, mukēt‑, fungus or mushroom.
Examples include erythromycin (Greek eruthros, red), an antibiotic similar in its effects to penicillin; vancomycin, used against resistant strains of streptococcus and staphylococcus; and streptomycin, the first drug to be successful against tuberculosis.
