Mucus.
Greek muxa, slime, mucus.
The rabbit disease called myxomatosis is so named because it causes swelling of the mucous membranes and inflammation and discharge around the eyes. In medicine, a myxoedema (US myxedema) is a swelling of the skin and underlying tissues giving a waxy consistency; a myxoma is a benign tumour of connective tissue containing mucous or gelatinous material; a myxovirus is one of a group of RNA viruses including the influenza virus. A myxomycete is a type of slime mould.
