French natron, via Spanish and Arabic from Greek nitron, saltpetre.

Natron is a mineral salt found in dried lake beds, consisting of hydrated sodium carbonate; natrolite (Greek lithos, stone) is a hydrated silicate of sodium and potassium; natrojarosite (a variety of jarosite, named after a place in Spain) is a basic sulphate of sodium and iron; natrium is an archaic chemists' name for sodium (supplying its chemical symbol, Na); natriuresis (Greek ourēsis, urination) is the excretion of sodium in the urine.
