Greek phuton, a plant, from phuein, come into being.

Phytoplankton is plankton consisting of microscopic plants; a phytotoxin is a poisonous substance derived from a plant; a phytochrome is a blue-green pigment found in many plants, in which it regulates various developmental processes; phytochemistry is the branch of chemistry concerned with plants and plant products; phytogeography, also called plant geography, is the part of botany that deals with the geographical distribution of plants; phytopathology is the study of plant diseases.
