salping(o)-

Fallopian tube.

Greek salpinx, salping‑, trumpet (referring to its shape).

In medicine, salpingectomy (Greek ektomē, excision) is surgical removal of a Fallopian tube; salpingitis is inflammation of one; salpingostomy (Greek stoma, mouth) is an operation to restore free passage through a blocked one; salpingo-oophoritis (Latin oophoron, ovary) is inflammation of a Fallopian tube and an ovary.

At one time salpingo‑ could refer to the Eustachian tubes leading from the middle ear to the pharynx, as in salpingo-nasal, though this sense is now obsolete. However, a salpinx can be either a Eustachian tube or a Fallopian tube.
