stib(o)-

Also stibio‑.

Antimony.

Latin stibium, black antimony, antimony trisulphide.

The Latin name for this antimony compound, once used as a cosmetic, has supplied the element's chemical symbol, Sb. Stibnite is antimony sulphide, the chief ore of antimony; stibine is the poisonous, colourless gas, antimony hydride, SbH3; stibogluconate (in full sodium stibogluconate) is useful in the treatment of leishmaniasis. Stibiopalladinite and stibiotantalite are minerals containing antimony in association with, respectively, palladium and tantalum.
